PHILLIP SPICER

STAFF ACCOUNTANT, HUGH CHATHAM MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Simon Sinek, British-American author and motivational speaker, said “A team is not a group of people who work together. A team is a group of people who trust each other.” Teamwork is a core value at Hugh Chatham and we see it every day. No matter the department, shift, or circumstances, we work with and rely upon each other as we provide exceptional care to the community. This week’s Hugh Chatham Way Highlight focuses on someone who is a trust-builder, and deeply appreciated by his co-workers — Staff Accountant, Phillip Spicer.

Cheryl Pardue, Controller said, “Phillip is a caring and compassionate person. He is always willing to go above and beyond for fellow employees and friends. He is also a team player and always willing to help others in the organization. Phillip strives to do the best job he can every day.” Another colleague, Kayla Wagoner, Assistant Controller, said “Phillip is a man of integrity. He is honest, true, noble, trustworthy, kind and has strong moral principles. I could not ask for a better friend or co-worker in Phillip!”  Tina Couch, Accounts Payable, continues by saying “Phillip is always willing to help others. He will go above and beyond to help and always with a friendly smile. He is an invaluable member of the Hugh Chatham family.”

Thank you, Phillip, for your diligence, compassion, and integrity. It is clear that your team knows they can depend on you, and that you care. It is an honor to recognize your devotion to the accounting team and to the entire Hugh Chatham family.

Q & A with Phillip

How did you come to Hugh Chatham?
My previous job position was being relocated to Mooresville, NC, and I didn’t want to commute that far to work. I was notified of an opening here at Hugh Chatham by a current co-worker. I came for a couple interviews and really liked the team and family atmosphere, so I decided this would be a good place for me.

What led you to a career in accounting?
I’ve always liked math and working with numbers, and studying accounting in school was interesting to me. I was referred by one of my professors for my first job while in school, and things just progressed from there. It has been a rewarding career getting to see and learn different aspects of how businesses operate.

How do you and your team exhibit STARS?
Our team exhibits STARS by demonstrating Accountability. We understand how important our jobs are to supporting the frontline staff, who provide exceptional health care to our community. We hold each other accountable to be sure we are accomplishing our tasks accurately and efficiently, because we know that our Hugh Chatham family depends on us for that. Accounting principles also have to be followed and upheld at all times. Our team also has a big focus on Teamwork…we all help each other to meet our deadlines. We share a lot of duties and help each other to be the best team we can be. There are a lot of things to account for in the operating process of our hospital!

What do you like to do for fun?
My favorite hobby for fun and relaxation is outdoor grilling/smoking. I like to use charcoal combined with different types of wood smoke paired with different foods.
