Because state-of-the-art radiation therapy and chemotherapy are available in Elkin, patients and their families can avoid the added burden of traveling to other cancer centers miles away.
Gregory Fiets, MD is a board-certified radiation oncologist with the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Department of Radiation Oncology and Medical Director of the Regional Cancer Center at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital (HCMH). He and his team provide care at the center five days a week.
The Regional Cancer Center at HCMH offers patients improved chances for a cure with fewer side effects. This state-of-the-art approach, called intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) uses computer-generated radiation dose calculations. The radiation beam intensity is varied or modulated to allow exact dose delivery. The clinical use of IMRT shows excellent promise for prostate cancer, head and neck cancers, and lung cancer.
HCMH offers complete mastectomy treatment and services. Recommended mastectomy fitters visit the patient’s home approximately six to eight weeks after surgery for a prosthesis fitting. In the meantime, a “softie” and pillow are provided for the patient’s comfort during the recovery period. This program is part of Hugh Chatham’s Cancer Support Services program.
