Kasey Martin, Surry-Yadkin EMC, Dobson, NC, 2023, “Advances in Healthcare Recognized at Local Hospital; Member Moment: Hugh Chatham Health
It is no secret that Hugh Chatham Health is among the top leaders in its industry for providing outstanding healthcare. Some may argue that it is the best in the area. Recent recognitions, growth in healthcare options, and continuous support from partnering agencies are reflective of the impact the healthcare system and its staff have had on the community.
An independent, not-for-profit community healthcare network, Hugh Chatham Health is an 81-bed acute care hospital that may be small in stature, but delivers high quality, convenient, one-on-one healthcare to residents occupying the Yadkin Valley region of North Carolina and parts of Virginia. Hugh Chatham Health’s 1,000 team members includes 70 providers – covering 29 locations and six counties. The hospital, whose headquarters rests in Elkin, NC, has been both locally and nationally recognized for patient satisfaction, safety, and clinical quality.
Recently, Hugh Chatham Health was named one of America’s “Best Hospitals for Obstetrics” by the Women’s Choice Award, America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare. Out of 4,729 hospitals who offer obstetrics, Hugh Chatham Health ranks in the top 10%. The Women’s Choice Award is a resource available to women and serves as a guide for where to receive the best care, focusing on high quality patient experiences.
The methodology for the “Best Hospitals for Obstetrics” combines national accreditations, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) and hospital outcome scores with primary research about women’s healthcare preferences. According to Hugh Chatham Health, “the award recognizes excellence in obstetric services based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.” For example, two of these criteria met by Hugh Chatham Health are, patient safety ranking based on 12 Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ measures of infection and complication rates, and low rates of early elective deliveries (between 0-1%). This award not only exemplifies how Hugh Chatham’s OB/GYN team providers go above and beyond for their patients, but also allows for mothers-to-be to feel confident in securing an award-winning healthcare facility that focuses on the wellbeing of their current and future patients.
“Hugh Chatham Health is pleased to receive this recognition which highlights the exceptional care that is provided at our birth center. Our team includes OB/GYNs, Certified Nurse Midwives, specially trained OB nurses and techs, Family Physicians and Neonatal Nurse Practitioners. Together, they use their experience, talent, and collaborative efforts to focus on providing each patient with individualized and compassionate care experience that they desire and the quality outcomes that they expect – right here, close to home and family. We are proud to be a part of our community’s growth and are privileged to care for others as they welcome a new life,” said Mary Blackburn, chief clinical officer and VP for Care Innovation when interviewed after receiving the award.
Equally as exciting is the expansion of services provided by Hugh Chatham Health. In January, the team opened a new physician practice, Hugh Chatham Health – Family Medicine and Obstetrics. The vision behind opening the new facility was to offer a one-stop-shop for all members of the family who require healthcare. OB, newborn, pediatric, and adult patients can all be seen at the new facility. Three family medicine and obstetrical care physicians serve the practice, Meg Arboleda, MD, Brianna Hitchner, DO, and Jona Lamphier, DO. Arboleda and Hitchner are new providers for Hugh Chatham Health, and Lamphier has been with the facility for almost three years.
Additional Hugh Chatham Health facilities include Hugh Chatham Health – Express Care in Dobson, NC, which is a member of Surry-Yadkin EMC, and Hugh Chatham Health – Urgent Care in Elkin, NC. Both clinics are open seven days a week, offer extended hours, and walk-ins are welcome with no appointment necessary. Treatment of common conditions, such as minor illnesses and injuries, as well as occupational health services are offered at both clinics. As the needs for patients continue to grow, so too will the offerings provided by Hugh Chatham Health. Their mission statement is simple, “Your Health. Our Passion.”, but their impact on the community and the care their teams provide is nothing short of significant, reliable, and commendable.
